FAQs
What is ESS /BESS?
In the industry and across our communications,ESS (Energy Storage System) and BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) are used interchangeably to describe the same technology.
Simply put, it is a high-capacity “energy reservoir” that captures electricity from the grid or renewables (like solar and wind) and stores it in professional-grade battery modules. This allows you to save power when it is plentiful or inexpensive and deploy it exactly when your facility or the grid needs it most.
What applications are energy storage systems (BESS) used for?
BESS delivers critical economic, operational, and financial value across multiple commercial, industrial, and utility scenarios:
- Peak Shaving & Energy Arbitrage: Charges during off-peak hours when electricity is cheap (or generated from renewables) and discharges during expensive peak hours, directly reducing power bills.
- Demand Charge Control: Limits sudden power spikes during high-load periods to prevent exceeding utility limits, avoiding heavy penalty fees from power providers.
- Renewable Energy Integration: Smooths out the unpredictable output of solar and wind. Stores daytime PV or night-time wind energy to supply during evening peak demand, eliminating energy waste (curtailment).
- Backup Power & Uninterruptible Supply (UPS): Provides instant backup for critical operations—such as cold chain logistics, automated manufacturing, mining ventilation, biopharma, and intensive agriculture (e.g., poultry farming)—preventing catastrophic batch losses, equipment damage, and safety hazards caused by power outages.
- Virtual Capacity Expansion (Infrastructure Bypass): Allows factories, commercial parks, and EV charging hubs to add high-power equipment or charging piles without waiting 1–2+ years or spending heavily on transformer and cable upgrades.
- Off-Grid & Weak Grid Optimization (Diesel Displacement): Replaces or optimizes expensive diesel generators in remote areas, islands, and weak-grid environments, significantly cutting fossil fuel costs, transport hassles, and carbon emissions.
- Grid Ancillary Services (Utility & Station Scale): Large-scale BESS participates in grid stabilization programs—such as fast frequency response (FFR), voltage control, and demand response—generating additional revenue streams by balancing the public power grid.
