TWS Technology ESS Case 1 Netherlands Municipal Sewage Treatment Plant Large

Amsterdam (Netherlands) | Municipal Sewage Treatment Plant

The Challenge

As a critical piece of urban infrastructure, this plant faced the dual pressure of soaring peak electricity tariffs and the risk of exceeding grid demand limits. In the context of the Netherlands’ volatile transition to intermittent renewable energy, the facility required a solution that offered absolute operational reliability and rapid deployment to minimize disruption to municipal services.

The Solution

TWS Technology delivered a 500 kW / 978 kWh grid-connected ESS utilizing 3 sets of ProeM Liquid-Cooling Cabinets, 5 sets of 100 kW PCS, and integrated AC/DC combiners. The system features a pre-integrated modular architecture that streamlines on-site assembly and wiring. By leveraging a 0.5C charge-discharge strategy and specialized Demand Control software, the system performs two full cycles daily to shave peak loads and stabilize the local energy footprint.

Key Outcomes

The streamlined “Plug-and-Play” design enabled the system to be connected to the grid in just 8 hours, reducing commissioning time by 80%. The plant now saves over €120,000 annually and has reduced its maximum power load by 15%. Additionally, a diesel generator interface ensures seamless 24/7 backup power, supporting the municipality’s 2030 carbon neutrality goals.
